Squall At Surgeons Cove

years its lighthouse has served as a guiding beacon. Large

fishing vessels, often struggling in storms at sea, have welcomed
its flashing light.

in the title refers to little sheds that fishermen had on
the docks for doing their work in.

Mission Of Mercy
Irelands
Eye, Newfoundland. In 1970, only three families still inhabited
Ireland's Eye. One night, a young baby got seriously ill.
While his mother holds him close for warmth and reassurance,
the men row feverishly to get the infant to the closest hospital,
which is in Trinity. They got him there safely and saved his
life but on the way home, the men got lost in the stormy waters
and all drowned.

End Of An Era

Newfoundland. This is the Manuels house in 1972. It does not
exist anymore. The house once stood proud, surrounded by a
beautiful estate. Now, like much of Exploits, it lies in the
dreams of yesterday. You can see what the house looked like
in the early 1900's by viewing the painting "The Manuels House".

Resettlement - Leaving Home
The bags are
packed, the windows are boarded up, and he is just waiting
to be picked up and carried away from the only home he has
ever known. A typical scene throughout outport Newfoundland
during the days of resettlement.

Government Tree
The tree that
overlooked Exploits for generations, and bore the marks of
many young lovers, disappeared the winter that the residents
were resettled from the island. Did government resettle it
too; or did it die of loneliness?

boy, I had many a spill; while riding my coaster down Lacey's
Hill". These words were penned in a poem by James Winsor,
postmaster and resident of Exploits Island, Notre Dame Bay,
Newfoundland.
